My wife received a call on our land line from someone purporting to be from Microsoft informing her that her details had been used in large volumes on internet traffic probably involving child porn and the buying of goods. When I took over the call I pressed hard for them to provide methods of them to prove who they were and they insisted that this could be done by telling me what my microsoft license number. After several minutes of argument they asked me to run a command prompt of "alloc". When I refused I was passed over to the caller's manager who went through to same rigmarole. Things got a bit heated but when I told him that I was an IT professional with over 40 years experience He put the phone down. A few minutes later he has the audacity to call again using a different number!
The number used were 02086215839 and 02085489682
These scammers operate from India. They prey on the elderly and naive. Billions get stolen every year from the US, UK and Australia mostly.
It's a huge problem and governments around the world needs to step up and address this. More importantly the Indian police needs to be improved dramatically to combat this. I believe they make so much money that they can pay off the police or anyone investigating them, pretty disgraceful really.
I'm glad you didn't fall for it, inform any elderly relatives to never allow remote access to their PC. To contact a friend or family member or their bank if they're worried.
